A rising sign — the ascendant — is the sign of the zodiac that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It changes about every two hours, which is why a birthday alone can’t find it: it takes a birth time, and a place. Twins an hour apart can carry different risings.
It matters twice over. First, it is the face you show first — the manner strangers meet before they meet the rest of you. Second, in whole-sign houses it sets the frame of the whole chart: your rising sign becomes your entire 1st house, and every other house takes its position from there.
